Institute of Japanese Studies

1. Introduction

    Institute of Japanese Studiesof Jilin University is a comprehensive academic studies institution directly affiliated to Jilin University that focuses on Japanese issues and Sino-Japanese relations. Approved by the State Council in 1964, Jilin University established the Japan studies Office. In 1979, it was renamed Institute of Japanese Studies of Jilin University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 1987, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as the key studies institute of liberal arts in universities directly under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. In 1994, with the need for comprehensive research on international issues at Jilin University, the Institute of Japanese Studieswith other national studies institutes in Jilin University to form the Northeast Asian Studies College. As a core part of it, the Institute of Japanese Studiesof Jilin University continued to carry out teaching and research on Japanese issues. In 2001, theInstitute of Japanese Studieswas adjusted to the Japan Research Center of Jilin University as needed. In November 2011, in response to the requirements of the State Council and the Ministry of Education to further strengthen the research on national issues, the Institute of Japanese Studiesof Jilin Universitywas reorganized. In July 2017, the Institute of Japanese Studies was approved by the Ministry of Education as a national and regional research filing center. At present, this center has formed a research team with a reasonable knowledge structure and age distribution, with a total of 26 full-time researchers, including one vice president of the Chinese Japanese Society and one deputy secretary general; and the vice council of the National Japanese Economic Association.

2. Positioning

Institute of Japanese Studies relies on the three advantageous disciplines of the Northeast Asian Studies College: Theoretical Economics (World Economics Major), Politics (International Politics Major) and World History (World History Major), and the Japanese Language and Literature of the School of Foreign Languages and the School of Public Foreign Language Education. Giving full play to the disciplinary and geographical advantages of Jilin University in the study of Japanese issues, it continues to condense the research direction, conduct in-depth research on Japan and its related major theoretical and practical issues, and expand its understanding of Japanese economy, politics, history, culture, and society. It conducts the interdisciplinary research, serves national diplomatic strategies, and contributes to national economic development and opening to the outside world.

The positioning of Institute of Japanese Studies is determined based on the construction positioning of the five national studies institutes of Jilin University, that is, to implement the spirit of the National Philosophy and Social Science Work Conference of the National Colleges and Universities and the spirit of instructions and ardent hopes of the state leaders for Jilin University to further enhance Jilin The university's ability to serve national strategies and local social and economic development. Jilin University will give full play to its own disciplines and geographic advantages to strengthen research on international issues, firmly promote the work of various institutes, conduct in-depth research, serve the national diplomatic strategy, serve the economic development and opening up of the northeast region, and serve the construction of the old industrial base of Jilin Province, and to make new contributions to our country's opening up.

3.Target

The overall goal of constructing the Institute of Japanese Studies is to keep accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education for the overall planning of the national and regional filing centers, with the "Outline of the Long-term Reform and Development Plan of Jilin University (2011-2020)" to build the Institute into a first-class domestic institute as well as an world-known high-level research institution on Japanese issues. It aims to provide a scientific basis for the country to formulate relevant strategies and policies and to carry out international cooperation.

We break down the overall target into the following sub-targets:

(1) Carry out innovative theoretical research on Japan's economics, politics and history, and produce a batch of high-level theoretical research results that have a certain impact at home and abroad.

(2) Focus on national development strategies and major needs, pay close attention to the latest developments in Japan’s political, economic and social development, and provide theoretical basis and feasible plans for the government and the national exchanges with Japan.

(3) Work on the way of disciplinary construction, strengthen the Japanese research team, continuously improve the researchers’ competence, improve the team structure, and build a rationally structured and innovative research group.

(4) Actively carry out academic exchanges, focus on expanding high-level academic exchanges with Japan, and build the Institute of Japanese Studies an important base for Japanese research with significant influence at home and abroad.

(5) Rely on subject construction and scientific research, actively cultivate specialized talents in Japanese research, making the Institute of Japanese Studiesan important training base for domestic Japanese economic, political, historical and cultural talents.

 

4. Team

Institute of Japanese Studieshas 26 researchers, whose research fields cover economics, politics, history, etc. The researchers are mainly teachers from the World Institute of Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University and international political studies, as well as some teachers from domestic and foreign scientific research institutions, domestic enterprises and institutions. They form a team of complementary professional knowledge with reasonable age distribution, and unity collaborative and efficient research team.

The current director of the Institute of Japanese Studies is Professor Pang Deliang (Deputy Dean of the Institute of Northeast Asian Studies, Jilin University, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Japan, and Vice President of the National Japanese Economic Association), and Professor Cui Jian (Deputy President of the Institute of Northeast Asian Studies College, Jilin University, Deputy Director of the Institute of Economics, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Japanese Economic Association).

 

5. Academic Exchange

(1). The Northeast Asian Studies College and the Institute of Japanese Studiessuccessfully held the international academic seminar on the "Belt and Road" Initiative and Sino-Japanese third-party market cooperation

(2)Professor Pang Delian from the Northeast Asian Studies College and a 4 people delegation visited Japan to participate in academic conferences and carry out exchange activities

(3)The President of the Northeast Asian Society of Japan Matsuno Shuji and his delegation visited the Northeast Asian Studies College and participated in the international academic seminar

(4)Professor Pang Deliang from the Northeast Asian Studies College participated in the 2019 Annual Meeting of the National Economic Association of Japan

(5) The "Survey on Japanese Youth's Perception of Chinese Image" by the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University took off in Japan.

(6)The Northeast Asian Studies College successfully held the "China-Japan International Symposium on Social Countermeasures for Population Aging"
