High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies- "Current Situation and Problems of Local Financial Institutions in Japan"

    On December 2nd, 2021, Professor NISHIDA AKIO, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce of Seinan Gakuin University, Japan, delivered a lecture on "Current Situation and Problems of Local Financial Institutions in Japan" at the invitation of the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, the Institute of Northeast Asian Studies, and the Institute of Japanese Studies of Jilin University. The lecture was held both as an online lecture and in person. Professor Cui Jian, Vice President of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, presided over the lecture and addressed the audience, while Associate Professor Li Hongmei, Deputy Director of the Institute of World Economics, Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, acted as the on-site interpreter. The lecture was attended by some faculty members, postgraduate students and Ph.D. students from the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University.

    Prof. NISHIDA AKIO is a member of Japan’s Association of East Asia Regional Studies, and a visiting scholar at the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University in China. He has served as a member of the Policy Evaluation Business Review Committee of the Okinawa Development Finance Corporation, a financial administration consultant of the Fukuoka Finance Bureau, and a member of the external evaluation committee of the Fukuoka Prefectural Credit Guarantee Association. His research focuses on the study of local financial systems in Kyushu, Japan.

    In his report, Professor Nishida analyzed the current situation and problems of local financial institutions in Japan from three aspects. First, he described the Japanese banking system, the concept of local circles, and the important role of local banks in the local economy. Second, the current situation and changes of local banks in Japan were explained in detail based on balance sheets from both deposit and loan aspects. Finally, he made a judgment on the future development trend of local banks in Japan under the COVID-19 pandemic.

    During the question and answer session, Prof. Nishida gave wonderful answers to the questions raised by the students and faculty members. Finally, Prof. Cui Jian made a wonderful comment on the presentation and expressed his gratitude to Prof. Nishida for sharing his research results.

    This academic lecture was one of the lectures in the High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies and part of the lecture series of Japanese experts. The success of the lecture has enhanced the understanding of the current situation and problems of local financial institutions in Japan among the faculty and students, broadened the academic horizons and made a positive contribution to the academic exchange activities between our college and Japan.
