Marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Jilin University’s regional and country studies institutions for Northeast Asia and the 30th anniversary of the Northeast Asian Studies College, the Forum on Peace and Development in Northeast Asia (2024) was held in Changchun on October 12, 2024. The event was jointly organized by the Northeast and Northeast Asian Studies College, Northeast Asian Studies College, Center for Northeast Asian Studies, Ministry of Education Joint Research Institute for Northeast Asia, and School of Social Sciences of Jilin University.
Jiang Zhiying, Secretary of the CPC Committee of Jilin University, attended the opening ceremony and met with some guests. Participants included Li Xiangyang, Member of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Dean of the Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy Institute, and President of the China Asia-Pacific Society; Sodongtsog, Director of the Defense Research Institute under the Ministry of Defense of Mongolia; Yury Kulinchev, Deputy Director of the Institute of China and Modern Asia, Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Center for World Politics and Strategy, and Chief Researcher; Kim Dong-soo, Director-General of the Industry and Trade Research Division at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade; Kazuko Takaya, Dean of the Faculty of Economics at Ritsumeikan University and Vice President of the Japan Association for Northeast Asian Studies; and Wang Shengjin, Senior Professor of Philosophy and Social Sciences and Director of the Center for Northeast Asian Studies, Jilin University.On behalf of the University’s CPC Committee and President Zhang Xi, Jiang Zhiying extended a warm welcome and sincere thanks to all guests. He noted that Jilin University, as the only key comprehensive university under the national layout in Northeast China, boasts a long history, profound academic heritage, and a complete range of disciplines, with solid historical accumulation and academic tradition in Northeast Asian studies. As one of the most influential and representative international academic conference brands in philosophy and social sciences hosted by the university for years, the Forum on Peace and Development in Northeast Asia provides a platform for in-depth exchanges and innovative thinking among experts in the field. It has not only become a key channel for governments, enterprises, and the public worldwide to stay updated on the latest academic research and future peace and development trends in Northeast Asia, but also an effective pathway to enhance mutual understanding, promote academic exchanges, build regional consensus, pursue peaceful development, and achieve civilizational mutual learning among countries in the region. He expressed hope that scholars would leverage academic exchanges to spark innovative ideas, explore new paths and measures for sustaining peace, stability, and development in Northeast Asia, and offer more insights and guidance. Jilin University stands ready to fulfill its responsibilities, deliver practical outcomes, and work with experts and scholars from all countries, universities, and research institutions to contribute more strength and wisdom to advancing the Belt and Road Initiative, fostering a community with a shared future for mankind, and promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in Northeast Asia.
Han Xiping, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of Jilin University and Dean of the Northeast and Northeast Asian Studies College, delivered an opening address. He emphasized that 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. In his important speech at the commemorative conference, General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed that China will continue to uphold the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, work with all countries to build a community with a shared future for mankind, and make greater contributions to safeguarding world peace and promoting common development. The holding of the Forum on Peace and Development in Northeast Asia (2024) is a practical measure to thoroughly implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech, as well as a valuable opportunity for experts and scholars from Northeast Asian countries to gather and discuss peace and development, laying a solid foundation for the strong desire of people in the region to pursue peace, seek development, and promote cooperation. He encouraged scholars to share views, strengthen exchanges, and continue to offer new ideas and explore new prospects for peace and development in Northeast Asia.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Qu Hongmei, Dean of the School of Social Sciences of Jilin University, and the keynote speeches session was chaired by Wu Hao, Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University. Li Xiangyang, Sodongtsog, Yury Kulinchev, Kim Dong-soo, Kazuko Takaya, and Ba Dianjun, Deputy Director of the Center for Northeast Asian Studies, delivered keynote speeches titled China’s High-Level Opening-Up Boosts Northeast Asian Regional Economic Cooperation, Cooperation Initiatives and Challenging Issues for Northeast Asian Countries, Geopolitical Challenges and Prospects for Russia-China Cooperation in the Current Context, Challenges and Cooperation Plans for Northeast Asian Economic Cooperation, China’s Food Security and the Possibility of Japan-China Cooperation—A Case Study of Japanese Trading Companies, and An Era of Uncertainty: Dilemmas and Breakthrough Paths for Northeast Asian Regional Cooperation, respectively.
The one-day forum gathered over 150 experts and scholars from nearly 50 universities and research institutions at home and abroad, including the Russian Academy of Sciences, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Saint Petersburg State University, Far Eastern Federal University, the Strategic Research Institute under the National Security Council of Mongolia, the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the National University of Mongolia, the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, the Seoul Institute, the East Asian Institute for Aging and Welfare, Sogang University, Waseda University, Niigata Prefectural University, Kwansei Gakuin University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Political Science and Law, Nankai University, Fudan University, and Xiamen University. During the thematic discussions, 70 experts and scholars from China, Russia, Mongolia, South Korea, and Japan presented reports on ten topics under five themes: National Politics and Regional Situations in Northeast Asia, National Economies and Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia, Population Issues and Social Development in Northeast Asia, People-to-People Exchanges and Civilizational Mutual Learning in Northeast Asia, and New Prospects for the Revitalization of Old Industrial Bases in Northeast China. They discussed current challenges in Northeast Asia, shared national experiences, explored solutions, and offered advice for peace and development in the region.
Notably, this is the 14th edition of the forum, marking its largest scale and highest participation to date. As a key event celebrating the 60th anniversary of Jilin University’s regional and country studies institutions for Northeast Asia and the 30th anniversary of the Northeast Asian Studies College, the forum has continuously expanded its academic depth and scope of topics, aligning with the theoretical and practical needs of contemporary regional and country studies.
Relevant officials from the CPC Committee Office, School of Social Sciences, Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, as well as faculty representatives from relevant university units, attended the meeting and the opening ceremony.
