In 2013, in the communication between the Northeast Asian Studies College and Department of Policy Planning of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, the idea of establishing the Institute of Arctic Studies was proposed, which was praised and supported by the leaders of the Department of Policy Planning of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In December that year, a decision was made that the Institute of Arctic Studies of Jilin University was established based on the Northeast Asian Studies College. Since its establishment, Institute of Arctic Studies has organized a group of young and middle-aged scholars to actively carry out research on Arctic issues, initially established a research echelon, and published more than ten monographs and dozens of papers at home and abroad. In addition, the Institute of Arctic Studies has hosted many international and domestic academic conferences on Arctic issues, and has conducted extensive and in-depth cooperation with the Russian Academy of Military Sciences, the Russian Academy of Arctic Sciences and other research institutions, and has achieved positive influence in the field of Arctic issues.
