On January 15, 2026, the School of Northeast Asian Studies and the Institute of Japan co-hosted the seminar themedResolutely Safeguarding National Security and Interests, Firmly Resisting Japan’s New Militarism – Domestic and Foreign Policy Trends of the Takachi Administration. More than 20 experts and scholars from the Institute of Japan, Institute of Korea, Editorial Department ofContemporary Economy of Japan, as well as the Institute of World Economics, Institute of International Politics and Institute of History and Culture under the School of Northeast Asian Studies attended the event.
Professor Wu Hao pointed out that the Takachi administration’s remarks involving Taiwan are extremely erroneous and dangerous, seriously interfering in China’s internal affairs and violating the spirit of bilateral political documents between China and Japan. He urged academic circles to deepen special research on Japan in response to national strategies and provide decision-making support. Professor Pang Deliang stressed that the Taiwan question marks the red line of China’s core interests. Sanae Takaichi’s provocative remarks on Taiwan have severely undermined China-Japan relations and international norms. He highlighted that analyzing Japan’s rightward political shift and the essence of its new militarism is an indispensable responsibility of academia.
Participants conducted in-depth discussions on the harms of Taiwan-related fallacies by Japanese politicians, trends of Japanese militarism, and bilateral strategic games. Consensus was reached that Japan’s accelerating political right turn has driven it to shift domestic crises outward, while constitutional revision and military expansion continuously threaten regional peace and stability. Experts suggested China should maintain strategic composure, adopt targeted and multi-pronged measures to resolutely curb Japan’s military expansion ambitions and risky acts.
