Jilin University-Peking University Northeast Asia Forum (2025) Held Successfully at Jilin University

On November 29, 2025, the Jilin University-Peking University Northeast Asia Forum (2025) was successfully hosted by Jilin University. Centered on the theme “Northeast Asia Amid Shifting International Order”, the forum was co-organized by the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University and the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, Peking University.

Professor Zhang Huizhi, Deputy Director of the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, presided over the opening ceremony. Professor Wu Hao, Dean of the School of Northeast Asian Studies, Jilin University, and Professor Li Hanmei, Dean of the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, Peking University, delivered opening addresses respectively.

In his speech, Dean Wu Hao reviewed the 15-year development of the forum and spoke highly of its role as a vital platform for scholars from the two universities to exchange ideas and insights on Northeast Asian issues. He remarked that the forum serves not only as a bridge for in-depth communication but also as an intellectual hub for deciphering complex regional situations and building consensus. Against the current global backdrop, thorough strategic deliberations carried out at the forum carry exceptional importance. He expressed hopes that the forum would keep acting as a bond to deepen the friendship between the two universities and jointly boost innovation and advancement in academic research.

Dean Li Hanmei first extended gratitude to Jilin University for its dedicated efforts and elaborate preparations for the event. She noted that Northeast Asia is confronted with major security challenges, with profound transformations taking place in both regional security frameworks and geopolitical landscapes, making the forum’s theme highly timely. She looked forward to participants engaging in full exchanges and offering incisive views to continuously advance peace and development across Northeast Asia.

During the keynote session, experts and scholars from Peking University and Jilin University launched thorough discussions around three core topics: “State-to-State Relations and International Order in Northeast Asia”, “Restructuring of the Regional Economic Order in Northeast Asia”, and “Restructuring of the Regional Security Order in Northeast Asia”. The scholars analyzed the internal logic behind major power interactions and the evolution of regional order from multiple perspectives, focused on the latest trends of regional industrial chains, supply chains and technology policies, and deliberated on key issues including national strategic adjustments and the evolution of bilateral ties.

Professor Li Hanmei and Professor Wu Hao delivered closing remarks at the forum’s closing session. Both deans fully affirmed the fruitful outcomes of the forum, acknowledging that it had built a high-standard academic dialogue platform for scholars of the two institutions. They anticipated sustaining regular exchange mechanisms to open new chapters of academic collaboration, pooling cross-university strengths to further theoretical research and practical exploration on Northeast Asian affairs.
