On July 5, 2025, the academic seminar Great Power Games and the Future of Globalization: Competition, Cooperation and Symbiosis was convened at Jilin University. Co-hosted by the Northeast Asian Research Center, Northeast Asian Research Institute, Northeast and Northeast Asian Research Institute of Jilin University, together with the Institute for Globalization and Cultural Development Strategy and Jingshi Academy · Institute of Chinese Culture of Beijing Normal University, the event gathered more than 50 scholars from nearly 30 universities and institutions including the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Party School of the Central Committee of CPC (National Academy of Governance), Renmin University of China, Peking University, China Institute of International Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, China Foreign Affairs University, Nankai University, Fudan University, Beijing Normal University and Jilin University. Professor Wu Hao, Dean of the Northeast Asian Research Institute of Jilin University, presided over the opening ceremony.
Professor Qu Hongmei, Dean of the Institute of Social Sciences of Jilin University, Professor Wu Zhicheng, Dean of the Institute of International Strategy of Party School of the Central Committee of CPC (National Academy of Governance), and Professor Xue Xiaoyuan, Dean of the Institute for Globalization and Cultural Development Strategy of Beijing Normal University, delivered opening speeches in succession.

In her address, Professor Qu Hongmei pointed out that General Secretary Xi Jinping has made profound judgments on global development trends, and put forward major initiatives including the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative to address severe global challenges. These initiatives provide theoretical guidance and practical paths for building a community with a shared future for mankind and advancing economic globalization toward greater openness, inclusiveness, benefit-sharing, balance and win-win results. As the only key comprehensive university deployed by the state in Northeast China, Jilin University boasts a glorious revolutionary tradition and fine red genes, and always takes serving national strategies as its vital mission. Amid intensifying great power competition and severe counter-globalization headwinds, the academic circle must follow Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy to conduct in-depth research on new situations, challenges and directions of globalization. She expected the seminar to serve as a key platform for academic exchanges and support the construction of an independent knowledge system of China’s philosophy and social sciences.
Professor Wu Zhicheng briefly analyzed challenges facing the anti-globalization wave, noting that the seminar theme highly aligns theoretical, strategic and policy demands, and hoped scholars would produce high-quality research achievements on globalization issues through exchanges.
Professor Xue Xiaoyuan called on Chinese scholars to face up to daunting globalization challenges, voice opinions actively, promote dialogue over confrontation in great power relations, and boost sustained global development. On behalf of the editorial board of Globalization Studies, he announced that the journal has reached an agreement with Springer Publishing House to launch an English edition and upgrade its publication frequency to biannual issues.
The keynote speech session was chaired by Professor Chen Yue from Renmin University of China and Researcher Zhao Tao, Editor-in-Chief of Jianghai Academic Journal. Keynote reports were delivered by Professor Wu Zhicheng, former Researcher Xu Bu of China Institute of International Studies, Researcher Fu Xiaoqiang (Vice President of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations), Professor Sun Jisheng (Vice President of China Foreign Affairs University), Professor Yu Dianli from Zhejiang International Studies University, Professor Yu Tiejun (Dean of Peking University Institute of International Strategy), Professor Xue Xiaoyuan, and Professor Ba Dianjun, Deputy Director of Jilin University Northeast Asian Research Center.

In thematic discussions, scholars delved into three topics: Great Power Games and Regional & National Studies, New Progress in Globalization Theories and Practices, and Global Governance in the Digital Era. From political, economic and security perspectives, they analyzed impacts of Trump’s return to the White House on global and regional order, new trends and challenges of globalization, new dynamics of globalization and regional cooperation, as well as the UN’s role in globalization and global governance.

During the seminar, a new book launch ceremony for Globalization Studies (Spring 2025 Volume) was held. Researcher Xi Weidong, President and Editor-in-Chief of Central Compilation & Translation Press, addressed the event. He highly praised the academic quality and influence of the journal, urged domestic scholars to leverage domestic strengths, build multi-level cooperation mechanisms, deepen globalization research and generate high-quality outcomes. He stated that the press would keep supporting the journal’s publication, striving to build it into a top academic platform for globalization and global governance studies to serve high-level academic research in related fields.
Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the seminar thoroughly analyzed new patterns of global competition and cooperation, focusing on sound global development and improved global governance. Its successful holding carries great significance for advancing domestic globalization research and constructing China’s independent globalization knowledge system.
