The International Academic Conference "China and Russia’s Roles Amid the Great Transformation of the International Order" Held Successfully

On March 27, 2025, the international academic conference themed China and Russia’s Roles Amid Profound Changes in the International Order was jointly organized by the Northeast Asian Research Center, the Department of Politics of Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Foundation for Political Science Development, the Northeast and Northeast Asian Research Institute, the School of Northeast Asian Studies & Northeast Asian Research Institute, and the Institute of Russian Studies of Jilin University. More than 20 experts and scholars from Jilin University, Peking University, Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences and Moscow Power Engineering Institute participated online and conducted thorough and in-depth discussions on the conference theme.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Zhao Yang, Vice Dean of the School of Northeast Asian Studies & Northeast Asian Research Institute of Jilin University. Professor Wu Hao, Dean of the School of Northeast Asian Studies & Northeast Asian Research Institute and Executive Dean of the Northeast and Northeast Asian Research Institute of Jilin University, and Professor Alexey Mamechev, Deputy Head of the Department of Politics of Lomonosov Moscow State University, delivered opening remarks successively. Professor Wu Hao expressed gratitude to Chinese and Russian scholars for their support. He noted that the conference marks an important achievement of the institutionalized cooperation between the two sides, and stated that Jilin University will further advance all-round cooperation to facilitate academic exchanges between China and Russia. On behalf of Academician Andrey Shutov, Head of the Department of Politics of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Professor Alexey Mamechev extended congratulations on the convening of the conference. He pointed out that a sustainable cooperation framework has been established, and looked forward to elevating bilateral cooperation to a new height.

Participants carried out extensive and in-depth discussions on two major topics: profound transformations of the current international order, and the roles of China and Russia in the emerging international order. Scholars from both countries agreed that China and Russia are playing a vital part amid the evolving international landscape. China’s vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind exerts far-reaching influence on global peace and development. They also held that the two countries should properly embrace opportunities and tackle challenges in the changing international environment, and deepen cooperation in energy trade, technical support, high-tech industries and other fields.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Alexey Mamechev and Professor Xu Bo, Director of the Institute of Russian Studies of Jilin University, delivered concluding remarks and thanked all participants for their active engagement. Both sides believed that the conference prompted scholars from the two countries to think more deeply about changes in the international order and their implications, and built a sound platform for academic exchanges in regional and country studies between China and Russia.

This is the second international academic conference co-hosted by the two institutions since the signing of the comprehensive cooperation agreement. Going forward, the School of Northeast Asian Studies of Jilin University and the Department of Politics of Lomonosov Moscow State University will continue to deepen high-level cooperation in talent cultivation and academic communication, and make greater contributions to people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Russia.
