On November 27, 2024, upon the invitation of the Valdai Discussion Club, Russia’s top think tank, Professor Xu Bo from the Northeast Asian Studies College and the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University participated online in the academic seminar themedRussia-DPRK Relations and the Regional Situation in Northeast Asia, hosted by the Club.

The seminar was moderated by Ivan Timofeev, Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC). Participating experts discussed new shifts in Russia-DPRK relations and their international implications since 2024. Professor Xu Bo delivered remarks on the driving forces behind Russia-DPRK cooperation and major-power politics in Northeast Asia. He pointed out that evolving Russia-DPRK ties constitute part of the shifting regional order in Northeast Asia. China has consistently committed itself to safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and advocates dialogue to improve bilateral ties and ease regional tensions.

Founded on the initiative of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy (CFDP), the Valdai Discussion Club serves as a key intellectual advisory body for the Russian President and government. President Vladimir Putin personally attends and delivers addresses at the Club’s annual flagship conferences. This seminar forms part of the Valdai Discussion Club’s regular academic events.

This academic exchange has actively helped expand the academic influence of the School of Northeast Asian Studies and the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University within Russian academic circles and deepened scholarly exchanges between Chinese and Russian researchers.
