Study on Russian Conservatism and Practice (19YJA770019) is a program of the 2020 Humanities and Social Science General Program sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

This program comprehensively studies the ideological evolution and practices of conservatism, one of the most influential ideological systems in the world, since its formation in Russia until modern times, including the fundamental theory and methodology of Russian conservatism, political and legal thoughts, and views on national, economic and other domestic and foreign policies; the overall reaction and practices of conservatives to the modernization process of the country in the political, economic, social and national spheres, the situation of various conservative political, social and cultural groups, the role of conservative politicians in government institutions, the composition, activities, programs and position of conservative parties in social movements; it explores some of the hotly debated questions among historians and political scientists, such as the nature of Russian conservatism, whether conservatism existed in the Soviet Union, and what elements contemporary conservatism drew from the conservative thought of earlier stage of the October Revolution.

The program is headed by Xu Jinqiu of the Northeast Asian Research Center with a total budget of 100,000 yuan. As the dramatic practice of reform in modern Russia shows, it will not be in vain that Russia turned to conservative ideas and combined modern principles with historical traditions and everything that grew up in the homeland. China is also facing the grim task of realizing the modernization of national politics, and it is necessary to take full account of the socio-political and cultural historical characteristics of the country so that the development is based on the country's historical tradition and national spiritual culture. The theoretical results of this study can be a reference for the national government to formulate reasonable strategies and policies for political modernization.
