On November 16th, 2022, the lecture "Economic Outlook of Korea" of the High-End Symposium on Northeast Asia International and Regional Studies was successfully held at Jilin University. The lecture was jointly organized by the Northeast Asian Research Center of Jilin University, the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, and the Special Committee for Northeast Asian Regional Studies, Academic Association for International Cultural Exchange. The College of Northeast Asian Studies invited Dr. Chon Sora, a researcher at the Korea Development Institute (KDI), to deliver the lecture. Associate Professor Xuan Chunji of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University hosted the lecture. At the beginning of the lecture, Associate Professor Xuan Chunji, on behalf of Prof. Wu Hao, Dean of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University, extended a warm welcome and high appreciation to Dr. Chon Sora.
Dr. Chon Sora, a graduate of the University of Washington, is the Director General of the Economic Outlook Office of the Korea Development Institute (KDI), one of the top economic think tanks in Korea.
Dr. Chon Sora began her presentation by listing Korea's GDP growth rate, inflation rate, unemployment rate, and other indicators. She pointed out that Korea's economic development record after the COVID-19 pandemic was relatively good compared to that of European and American countries. Korea is now close to full employment. However, inflationary pressures are high. The forecast for Korea's economic development in the second half of this year is pessimistic because Korea's economic development cannot be separated from China's, and the dynamics of China's pandemic prevention and control policies not only affect its own economic development, but also have a profound impact on Korea's economy.
During the question and answer session, all the students who attended the lecture spoke and asked questions. Dr. Chon was very receptive and had an active discussion with the faculty and students about the future direction of the Korean economy and the changes in China-Korea economic relations. The atmosphere was lively. At the end of the event, Associate Professor Xuan Chunji said that Dr. Chon's lecture and her research on the topic were of great value, which helped the students and faculty of the Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University to clarify their research ideas and discover new research perspectives.
